California Highway Patrolman Pummels Woman During Struggle on Side of Freeway

The CHP has launched an investigation after a patrolman was filmed punching a woman several times in the head during a confrontation near the 10 Freeway on Tuesday.

A shocking video out of California shows a highway patrolman pummeling a disheveled woman on the side of a freeway.

The California Highway Patrol has launched an investigation into the beating, which was filmed by a passing motorist on the 10 Freeway near La Brea Ave. on Tuesday afternoon.

Witnesses said the woman was wandering along a median next to the freeway on-ramp when the officer approached her.

In the video, they struggle for a moment before ending up on the ground, with the officer straddling the woman.

"He basically got on top of her … it's basically a UFC ground-and-pound move … full force, punching her in the head," David Diaz, who filmed it from his car, told KTLA-TV.

Eventually, as the woman covers up, another man appears and helps the officer restrain the woman.

The California Highway Patrol released a statement Thursday saying they'd seen the video of the freeway beatdown and were looking into it.

"As a matter of policy, every time there is a use of force by our officers, there is a review conducted to determine whether the use of force was appropriate," a patrol spokesman said.

The office and the woman have not been identified.

One witness told local NBC4 the woman "did not look well, mentally" and was missing her shoes.

Diaz said he believed the cop went too far.

"These are like, grown men, on top of you punching you to a point where she could've died out there," he told NBC4.

Re: California Highway Patrolman Pummels Woman During Struggle on Side of Freeway

The video from this idiot (why are they always clueless do gooders?) shows only the final seconds of a fairly long confrontation. She was a nut job transient that was walking in freeway traffic and failed to comply. She kept trying to walk out into traffic again and again and when the Officer tried to restrain her, she became combative and continuously grabbed at the Officer's uniform. He was forced to tackle her and hit her to get her fat ass to roll over she she could be restrained. If the Officer hadn't forced her to stop...she was hellbent to walk into traffic killing or injuring herself and others. The Officer did the correct thing...if the idiot woman hadn't been Black then nothing would have come of this. But not only is she Black, but she a nutter as well...so the usual Black community rebel rousers have joined with the nutjob defense groups to gang up on the Officer, to bitch and moan without even investigating the facts of the case. It's the same thing all the anti-police groups do every time something like this happens. The investigation will show the Officer acted within the law and policy and the various anti-police special interest groups will sling back into their corners until it happens again.

Wouldn't it have been better to tase her rather than blast her ten times with his fist

well, we have to wait for the investigations outcome to get a clearer view of why he did that as now it's just guessing and looks like a random attack.

It really depends. If the Officer felt that the Taser hit would have endangered the suspect (dropping her in traffic, not been effective at such close range, etc.) then there's no law or policy prohibiting him from going hands on...it just depends on the situation. In this case pepper spray would be a way bigger hazard for both the Officer and suspect next to a busy freeway. The Taser might have been just as big an issue as the pepper spray. You've got freeway traffic on one side and if I remember correctly, a fairly steep (20 foot plus) drop off on the other side. The Officer may not have had any options, but to go hands on and use body/head strikes to gain compliance. Don't forget, the suspect tried at every opportunity to get into traffic...the Officer absolutely had to contain her where she was using any means necessary for her safety and the safety of the drivers. Because of all the hazards, this is a really interesting use of force.
