On December 23, 2025, shortly after 1:17 p.m., a man entered a firearm retail store in the 1200 block of West Magnolia Boulevard in Burbank. While inside, he removed a rifle from a wall-mounted display rack and ran from the business on foot. A store employee reported the theft and gave a description and last known direction of travel.

At about 1:20 p.m., Burbank police officers found the man running eastbound in the 100 block of West Magnolia Boulevard while armed with the rifle. Officers repeatedly ordered him to drop the firearm.

The man refused, walked into the middle of the street, raised the rifle into a firing position, and pointed it at the officers. Two Burbank police officers fired and struck him, causing him to fall to the ground.

Officers approached and rendered first aid until paramedics arrived. The man was taken to a local trauma center, where he died. He was identified as 26-year-old Goma Garcia.

The rifle was determined to be a .22 caliber lever-action rifle. It was not believed to be loaded while it was on display, but it was unknown whether Garcia acquired or had access to ammunition before officers found him. Garcia's criminal arrest history included one 2025 arrest on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance.
