Two Chicago police officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert shortly after 7 a.m. on May 16, 2021, in the 3600 block of West Douglas Boulevard in North Lawndale. They spotted Bruce Lua, 45, in a vacant lot based on a resident's description, followed him into an alley and spoke to him.

Prosecutors said Lua drew a 9 mm pistol and fired at least eight rounds at the officers from point-blank range. One officer was shot in the hand, and the other was wounded in the hip and shoulder. The officers returned fire, wounding Lua in the leg. All three survived. The officers were treated at Mount Sinai Hospital and released the same day.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability released body-worn camera video of the shooting in June 2021. Lua was charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated battery of a peace officer and one count of unlawful use of a weapon. His bond was set at $10 million, with an additional $100,000 bond imposed in a pending aggravated-assault case. A jury found him guilty of attempted murder and aggravated battery in April 2026. Sentencing was set for May 18, 2026.

New video has been launched of an officer-involved shooting that wounded two Chicago cops and left one suspect hospitalized in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) on Wednesday launched physique digital camera footage of the May 16 incident. Police stated two officers on May 16 responded to a close-by ShotSpotter alert in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood and noticed an individual in a close-by vacant lot. Both officers tried to interact the suspect and adopted him down an alley.

The video confirmed one officer approaching the suspect together with his gun drawn when the suspect instantly opens fireplace. One video reveals an officer falling to the bottom as he returns fireplace.

Agonizing screams are then heard, adopted by one officer saying, “I’m hit, I’m hit.” That identical officer is later heard saying, “I’m hit in the vest too.”

Police later revealed that one officer was shot within the collarbone and shoulder and one other officer was shot within the hand. The suspect was additionally shot.

All three have been taken to the hospital and have since recovered.

Police charged Bruce Lua, 45, with two counts of tried homicide, two counts of aggravated battery towards a peace officer and one felony weapons cost.

COPA says getting the video launched inside a matter of weeks is a component of their purpose of transparency inside the police division.

“Today’s release within 24 days of the incident is consistent with our commitment to transparency and the timely release of video and other materials,” stated Interim Chief Administrator Andrea Kersten.

“At a time when the public demands answers, specifically as it relates to officer-involved shootings and the release of video footage, it is important that COPA remains the civilian oversight agency that is timely and trusted.”
