Boys, 7 and 9, Disarmed in Gun Standoff Near Albuquerque, February 16, 2025
Bernalillo County sheriff's deputies disarmed two brothers, ages 7 and 9, during a confrontation over a loaded handgun near Albuquerque, New Mexico, on February 16, 2025. Deputies responding to a report of children playing with a gun found the boys outside their home passing it between them. Deputies spent several minutes telling the boys to put the weapon down. A deputy fired a less-lethal round to distract them. Sheriff John Allen said one boy then raised the handgun and pulled the trigger, but it malfunctioned. Deputies moved in and took the gun. No live rounds were fired, and nobody was injured. The boys remained at home, and the sheriff's behavioral health unit connected the family with therapy, medical services, parenting support and other assistance. No charges had been filed against the boys or any adult as of May 2025, when authorities released drone and body-camera footage. |
