Bodycam Video Shows Fleeing Suspect Fatally Shot While Dragging Officer
Topeka, KS - Newly released body cam video shows what unfolded when Jarmane Logan was shot and killed by a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper who was being dragged by his SUV as Logan drove off. The officer initially spotted the vehicle stuck on an icy North Topeka street. Authorities said previously that’s the trooper recognized the car as one that fled him earlier in the day, and responded to the scene as well. The video begins with the officers, whose names have not been released, approaching the driver of the vehicle. The driver is seen reaching toward the center console. The trooper forcibly removes the woman from the car and holds her onto the ground. The Shawnee Co. District Attorney’s Office would not identify the driver. Immediately after the incident, authorities said Chelsee Retana and Misty Maspero were in the car at the time, but did not clarify who was behind the wheel. Only Retana has been charged in connection with the incident. After taking the driver to the ground, the trooper warns the TPD officer to look out. As the officer turns, her body cam captures an SUV coming toward them. The woman manages to get up and tries to get into the newly-arrived vehicle. As it starts to pick up speed, the trooper is dragged several steps. Gunshots ring out and the trooper falls to the ground. The SUV continues down the street and eventually comes to a stop. Logan, who was driving, had been shot and was taken to a local hospital where he died. Shawnee Co. District Attorney Mike Kagay ruled last month that the trooper’s actions were justified. |
