Muskogee Police released some body camera footage of a gunfire exchange with a man who investigators said threatened to kill a code enforcement officer. Police said Clayton Bailey, 34, was killed in the incident.

Investigators said a code enforcement officer came to Bailey’s house because his grass was overgrown.

They said Bailey pointed a gun at that enforcement officer and threatened to kill him, so that officer then called for help.

Muskogee Police said its special operations team showed up and an officer tried talking to Bailey, but Bailey told them he wouldn’t come out because he had been assaulted by them.

Officers said Bailey eventually came out with an AR-style gun and positioned himself on the side of the house.

Police say two officers shot at Bailey first, and Bailey fired back. He died at the scene.

“He’s not in the right frame of mind, and obviously, you’re an ordinary citizen, and even the guns we deal with on a daily basis are not an AK-47 of the drum magazine, so, take it all into account, we took it serious,” said Deputy Chief Chad Farmer, Muskogee Police.

“That’s why we brought the Bearcat up there, and when you come out aggressive with the rifle, that’s when they put rounds on it.”

Muskogee Police said it had no prior history with Bailey. The officers will remain on leave until the investigation is finalized.

During negotiations, the suspect claimed he was a military veteran and accused police of harming him in the past. Officials said he refused to come out of the home, turned off his phone, and warned officers he would not surrender.

Teehee said the man eventually opened the front door and fired at least three rounds from what appeared to be an AK-47-style pistol equipped with a drum magazine and green laser.

Two bullets struck the Bearcat, and a third ricocheted beneath it, damaging the concrete and continuing into a neighbor’s yard.

The suspect’s gun reportedly malfunctioned, preventing further shots.

Police say two officers returned fire during the exchange. Sergeant Wilkins, from the Bearcat turret, fired 11 rounds. Officer Johnson, stationed across the street, fired nine rounds.

The suspect was hit and died at the scene. No officers were injured.

Inside the home, investigators found multiple weapons and ammunition scattered throughout, including:

An AK-style rifle.
Rifles and pistols.
Drum magazines.
Loose ammunition and loaded mags.
Teehee said a home inspector had reported the suspect just a week earlier for pointing a green laser at him and yelling from the yard.

Authorities say the man had no known criminal history, and his claims of military service have not been verified. Police believe he may have been experiencing a mental health crisis.


Bet some neighbour (like usual) reported it to the code enforcement and exaggerated the tall grass knowing he would act up because he was acting weird lately.

All of this because an armed citizen had a schizophrenic crisis involving delusions, threats and firing a gun at cops. Those cops stopped an active shooter and got to go home to their loved ones at the end of the day. Win-win.
