Bayonne police officers responded at about 6:30 a.m. on June 7 to a 911 call about a domestic disturbance at a residence in the first block of West 1st Street.

Officers met a resident, who spoke with them about Lee Waskiewicz, 47, of Bayonne. The resident brought the officers into the home and called Waskiewicz down from the third floor.

When Waskiewicz saw the officers, he went back upstairs and out of sight in the doorway of an attic. Officer Edward Taveras asked him to come down to talk. Waskiewicz yelled for the officers to leave and threatened to stab them.

Waskiewicz came back to the stairs armed with a knife. During a second interaction in the stairwell, Officers Timothy Ballance, Jr. and Edward Taveras fired their service weapons, fatally wounding him.

Officers gave medical aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. Waskiewicz was taken to Bayonne Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at about 7:43 a.m. The incident remains under investigation.
