Re: Baltimore Police Shoot A Man Holding His Girlfriend Hostage At Knifepoint
The first cop was going through the proper crisis intervention steps. It may seem like the second cop was doing the same, but he said a few things you aren't supposed to in situations like this. You are not supposed to act like you can "fix" whatever is wrong, and you are not supposed to give an ultimatum (you can do *this* or *this*). It makes the person feel like their options are narrowed down to what the person intervening is allowing. That tends to further agitate someone who is already clearly agitated. It is a difficult situation, and usually ends the way this one did. To be clear, the cops aren't to blame at all for this. They handled it well, all things considered. Just adding some intervention tips that might save the life of a hostage. |
