Austin Officers Shoot Armed Man After Pursuit and Carjackings
On November 7, at about 3:11 a.m., a Bee Cave police officer tried to stop a vehicle on Highway 71 after clocking it at 67 mph in a 50 mph zone. The driver stopped near Highway 71 and 620, then took off north on Highway 620. The officer pursued the vehicle through Bee Cave and Lakeway. The vehicle was traveling north in the southbound lanes at about 90 mph. The pursuit was ended near Mansfield Dam, and officers later contacted the registered owner, who identified the driver as his son, Zachary Labre, 27. The father said Labre was armed, had been in a police pursuit, and had made suicidal statements. Labre then went to an ex-girlfriend's home and kicked in her door. She was not home. He later went to a Starbucks at Four Points and carjacked a woman who was waiting to go into work, then went to the H-E-B at Four Points, bought a T-shirt, changed shirts, and carjacked another vehicle. Austin officers tracked him to an apartment complex tied to the ex-girlfriend and found the carjacked Nissan Rogue. Officers blocked the vehicle in and saw Labre coming out of the apartment. He pulled out a gun and pointed it at officers. Austin officers shot him.
