On April 9, 2026, officers in Aurora, Colorado, responded to an apartment complex regarding a mental health crisis involving a man armed with a butcher knife. Upon arrival, the suspect was at a window, holding the blade to his own neck while threatening to slaughter anyone nearby.

Ignoring all verbal commands to disarm, the suspect suddenly charged out of the apartment, blade in hand, targeting responding officers.

Officer Mark Moore deployed his K-9 partner, Cyrus. Though Cyrus successfully engaged, the determined suspect fought through the apprehension, stabbing the K-9 and forcing him to retreat.

The suspect ambushed Officer Moore, striking him repeatedly in the head with the butcher knife. Fighting through life-threatening injuries and active stab wounds, Officer Moore drew and fired multiple rounds, neutralizing the lethal threat.

The suspect, 23-year-old Amare James Garlington, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Officer Moore miraculously survived the brutal attack after receiving critical medical treatment. K-9 Cyrus was rushed to an emergency veterinary hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
