Aurora Officers Shoot Armed Suspect on Clinton Street
On May 4, 2024, about 7:45 p.m., Aurora police officers were sent to the 1400 block of Clinton Street after multiple callers reported gunfire. Callers reported that a man had been shot in the leg and that the suspect left in a red Ford Mustang. Before officers reached the scene, other Aurora officers saw the Mustang and briefly pursued it, but lost sight of it. At the original scene, officers found a 29-year-old Aurora man with a non-fatal gunshot wound to his leg. The victim told officers the shooter was Jose Rodriguez. He said Rodriguez had been sitting on his couch with a gun to his head, and when he called 911, Rodriguez chased him and fired a shot inside the house. While officers were speaking with the victim, witnesses told them the suspect had returned. Officers Michael Larita and Matthew Cruz encountered the suspect, who was still armed, and gave commands before firing. Aurora Fire Rescue treated the suspect at the scene. He was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead. He was identified as 28-year-old Aurora resident Jose Luis Rodriguez Balderrama. Investigators recovered a Glock 22 .40 caliber handgun with a 20-round extended magazine and an auto switch. The initial shooting, the officer-involved shooting, and the internal review remain under investigation, and both officers are on restricted duty in non-patrol assignments.
