On Monday, May 12, 2025, Aurora 911 received a call at 2:58 p.m. about a person trespassing at an off-site airport parking lot in the 19900 block of East 56th Avenue. The caller said the man had no shoes on, appeared to be under the influence of drugs, did not appear injured, had no weapons, and was not threatening violence.

Employees made more calls between 3:14 and 4:59 p.m. They reported the man was still on the property, was trying to open car doors, and later was becoming more aggressive and trying to fight employees. The call was upgraded, and a solo Aurora officer was dispatched at 5:18 p.m. and arrived at 5:27 p.m.

The officer found the man at 5:28 p.m. and started talking to him. About a minute later, the man charged the officer. The officer used a collapsible baton and a Taser, but both were ineffective, and the man took the officer to the ground. An employee called 911 again and reported the officer had been tackled and was in trouble.

At 5:30 p.m., the officer got back to his feet, drew his firearm, and gave the man multiple commands to get on the ground. The man did not comply and walked toward the officer. The officer fired two shots.

Denver police officers were first to arrive to assist. Officers provided first aid until medical responders arrived. The man, identified as 32-year-old Rashad Terrell Johnson, was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

The officer was placed on paid administrative leave. The 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team and the Aurora Police Department's Internal Investigations Bureau are investigating the incident.
