Armed ninja crutch bank robber bandit arrested
ALBUQUERQUE The FBI says it has arrested the man who robbed an Albuquerque bank earlier Januari while dressed like a ninja, firing a pistol and hobbling on a crutch. Federal agents arrested Khoa Luong, 30, at the home of his brother in Kansas City, Mo.  The case of the Crutch Bandit captured national attention and caught the eye of one Missouri man who recognized the suspect in surveillance video posted on the Web and called the FBI. "The physical disabilities that he has I think made him a little more obvious," FBI special agent Stephan Marshal of the Albuquerque Division said. The suspect was dubbed the Crutch Bandit for the single crutch he used to get around. Luong told investigators he uses a crutch because his left leg was paralyzed by childhood polio. The FBI said the video led to several tips days after the Jan. 15 robbery of a Bank of Albuquerque branch. News of the bank surveillance tape started circulating in Kansas City. That's where a man named Ben said he recognized the bank robber as a man who likes to play poker at a Kansas City casino. The FBI said two bank employees in Kansas City also recognized the man in the surveillance video. "At this point he's facing charges of bank robbery," Marshal said. "There will probably be I'm assuming a number of state and local charges. "He'll be brought back to Albuquerque to face the bank robbery charges." Luong was allegedly involved in at least two other crimes: an armed robbery at an Albuquerque nail salon two days before the bank robbery and a high-speed police pursuit near Amarillo, Texas, several hours after the bank heist. In the chase Luong allegedly tried to run from police at speeds in excess of 140 mph. Luong was arrested, but produced false identification, eventually bonded out and went back home to Missouri. According to the FBI, Luong allegedly used the van stolen from the Albuquerque nail salon to help carry out the bank robbery. The owners of the nail salon were relieved today to hear the robber was caught, but they did not want to speak on camera. |
