Ali Naji, 33, entered the Dearborn police station in Michigan on December 18, 2022, drew a 9 mm handgun from his waistband and pointed it at Corporal Timothy Clive, who was behind the front desk. Naji pulled the trigger, but the gun malfunctioned and no round fired. As Naji tried to clear the malfunction, Clive moved the glass partition and fired 17 rounds in a continuous volley lasting four to five seconds. Naji died.

The handgun had been taken earlier that day from a barbershop where Naji had formerly worked. Dearborn police released lobby footage of the shooting in March 2023. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office declined to charge Clive, finding that he had acted in lawful self-defense and defense of others. A federal wrongful-death lawsuit filed by Naji's family was dismissed on summary judgment in January 2024. The Sixth Circuit affirmed the dismissal on October 28, 2024.

Naji's former attorney, Nabih Ayad, said the man had suffered from severe mental illness and that's what drove his actions.

Three months after Naji was killed, his family is suing the police department and the officer who killed him for $10 Million, calling Naji a ‘truly remarkable individual’, who lived his life to the fullest. The lawsuit states that the officer shot Naji in the head, chest, abdomen, left arm, genitals, and both legs.
