BROWNSVILLE -- Jurors handed down a 99-year prison sentence for gang member Abraham Mar for attempted capital murder in the June 25 shooting of Harlingen police officer Carlos Diaz and a two-year state jail sentence for fleeing from police.

Prosecutors said Mar will serve both sentences at the same time.

The confessed member of the West Side Aquas and Los Vallucos gangs hung his head as he was removed from Judge Leonel Alejandro's courtroom by bailiffs after the judge ordered him to be immediately turned over to the sheriff's office to begin serving his sentence.

Mar will later be transferred from the Carizzalez-Rucker Detention Center at Olmito to the Texas Department of Corrections diagnostic unit at Huntsville, where state officials will decide where Mar will serve his sentence.

Chief First Assistant District Attorney Charles Mattingly said the jury gave maximum sentences, in terms of years, on both charges and fines of $10,000 on each count.

The four-count indictment was handed down Wednesday afternoon. Mar remains in custody at the Carrizalez-Rucker Detention Center on a $1.01 million bond.

He is accused of shooting at Harlingen police Officer Carlos Diaz multiple times as Diaz allegedly tried to pull him over during a traffic stop the evening of June 25 at "F" Street and West Buchanan Avenue.

Diaz, who was still in the driver's seat, was shot in the right shoulder and the forearm, and one bullet grazed his head, officials said.

The officer was hospitalized for about 11 days.

Police described the shooting as an "ambush" on Diaz.

>> Count 4: Tampering with or fabricating physical evidence - intentionally or knowingly tried to conceal or alter or destroy a firearm with intent to impair its availability as evidence in the investigation.

WOW! 99 years for shooting a guy in the arm? He should of killed the guy then and got the same thing. I don't agree. You know the sentence was tough just cause he was a cop. The kid was young. Give em 15-20 so he can at least be free one day when he's much older (and wiser), no?
