Five Thai soldiers were killed and six civilians were wounded Wednesday evening in an armed attack on a security checkpoint in Narathiwat province, marking one of the deadliest incidents in Thailand's restive south in recent years. According to the Thai army, gunmen opened fire and threw pipe bombs at the checkpoint while soldiers from the 45th Battalion of the Special Task Force were carrying out security duties to protect the local population. Six civilians were also injured in the assault.

Local authorities said no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, and no suspects have been arrested as investigations continue. Southern Thailand — particularly the Muslim-majority provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, and Yala — has endured a low-intensity separatist insurgency since 2004. The conflict has claimed more than 7,000 lives, driven by rebel groups' demands for greater regional autonomy.
