A driver who narrowly avoided a train as he smashed through a level crossing during a six-mile police chase has been jailed for three-and-a-half years.

Terence Fowler, 20, of Peyton Avenue, March, paid no attention to his safety nor of other road users as he tried to shake off police between Peterborough and Whittlesey in June last year.

Peterborough Crown Court was shown CCTV footage of the chase that saw Fowler weave in and out of oncoming traffic and reach speeds of up to 90mph before he slowed for the level crossing where the barriers were already down.

However, instead of admitting the game was up, the fugitive put his foot down and ploughed through the gates just seconds before a train came by.

Understandably, the police officers in the car, who gave their commentary throughout the pursuit, wisely decided not to give chase.

Police had begun to chase Fowler, who was on licence from a young offenders institute, after the red Mercedes he was driving was reported stolen.

Passing sentence, Judge Nic Madge, told Fowler he was just seconds away from a much harsher penalty.

"It is hard to think of more dangerous driving which did not cause injury," Madge said.

"You were extremely lucky. You were seconds away from a fatal collision with a train in which may people, including yourself, would have been killed or injured.

"In other words, if you had survived you were seconds away from a life imprisonment."

He was lucky he wasn't 10 seconds slower or the train would of plowed into him. Probably would of been better though.

Now when it comes to stolen car cases here in the UK the police are told to terminate the chase as soon as they get either the numberplate or the general location. If theres evidence the car is stolen then the original owners can use that for insurance..and if its not stolen theyve found out who it is.

See, now thats called smart and is the safer thing to do! Its crazy to put the public at risk and make the alleged criminal react even more dangerously by chasing them down residential streets and highways. But cops will be cops, they want put the taxpayers money to good use and work the hell out of their pimped out police crusiers. They are living out their childhood fantasies, cops and robbers.
