2 Malaysians 'Burned' By Unemployed In Bangkok

09.08.2025 - Two Malaysian tourists were seriously injured after 'burning' an unemployed man in Bangkok, Thailand, yesterday. Lumpini police chief Yingyos Suwanno said the 10pm incident occurred when the victims, Ong Yik Leong, 26, and Gan Xiao Zhen, 27, were sitting on the steps outside the Big C shopping mall in downtown Bangkok. The suspects then poured a plastic bottle filled with thinner chemicals on the couple, who tried to flee, the Bangkok Post reported. The suspects chased them before setting the victim on fire.

He tried to flee but was detained by the public. Yingyos said Ong is currently being treated in the intensive care unit at the Police General Hospital while Gan is being treated at the King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. According to him, the suspect confessed to attacking the Malaysian randomly because he was angry after being dismissed from his job as a security guard. Viral video shows members of the public helping the victim by pouring water to extinguish the fire.

Victim Had A Conversation With The Attacker Before Being Burned

09.08.2025 - Two Malaysian tourists who were burned by a Thai man reportedly had a conversation with their attacker before the incident. According to witnesses, the two victims were seen chatting with the man before leaving and then sitting on the steps of the shopping mall. The man, known as Warakorn, approached the two victims and poured thinners before lighting the fire using his lighter as they tried to flee. Members of the public at the scene immediately intervened and detained the attacker until police arrived.

When questioned at the Lumpini Police Station, Warakorn confessed to the attack and stated that he did not have any disagreements with the victim. The man attributed his actions to the severe stress of unemployment and hunger. The former boxer had previously worked as a security guard but had recently been laid off and was having difficulty getting a new job.

The suspect told police that he did not eat on the day of the incident, which increased the pressure and prompted him to carry out the attack. A drug test on the suspect was found to be negative. Police are currently working with the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security to assist in the investigation and discuss support measures. Both Malaysian tourists are currently in stable condition, and authorities plan to take additional evidence from them while the investigation continues.
