Wanted Fugitive Runs Into SWAT Team Conducting Training Exercises

I read the headline and started laughing my butt off. Talk about landing in the palm of their hands.

A wanted fugitive was taken into custody in Utah this week when he literally ran into a SWAT Team and K-9 units conducting training in the area.

Provo Police report that Derreke Nelson, 39, was trying to elude parole officers when he was caught Thursday.

“Of course, it helps when fugitives run right into a crowd of 30 SWAT officers and three K9 units who just happen to be training in the area,” Provo police said.

Nelson was declared a fugitive when he failed to check-in with his parole officer on Feb. 22, KTVX-TV reports. He was on parole for theft and other charges.

Officers spotted Nelson in a car with two others. They all took off when the car was stopped, according to the station.

The search for one of those other individuals prompted police to put a nearby elementary school on "soft lockdown," the station reported.

Police caught that person and took him into custody.

Re: Wanted Fugitive Runs Into SWAT Team Conducting Training Exercises

Just in case you were like me and wondering what a "soft lockdown" was, here's an explanation I found.

Soft lockdown: District 117 is in 'soft' lockdown on a 24/7 basis. That means all the classroom doors and exterior building doors are locked. Visitors are asked to state who they are and the nature of their business when they are buzzed into a building. They should not be upset when people don't hold doors open for them or show them the same courtesies once extended.

Hard lockdown: In a hard lockdown, non-employees are prohibited from entering a district building, whether it is a school or district office until whatever incident that warranted the hard lockdown is resolved. Oftentimes, the hard lockdown won't be lifted until the local police department gives the district the 'all-clear' sign. Police often ask the district to hold off on informing our parents regarding our process for dismissal until they feel the situation is under control.
