Re: Turning A House Into Fire Wood

I was the key grip and gaffer (lighting) for second unit on a movie back in 2000. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0267679/

We shot all of the stunts, explosions and special effects. There was one scene where lightning hits a transformer on top of a telephone pole, making it explode. The SE guys rigged the pole (which was only about 15 feet high as only the top was in shot, not the ground) with explosives and my crew provided the lightning flash effect with a special "lightning strike" rig (the lightning bolt itself was added later via CGI). On the first take, the explosion was cool but not anywhere near big enough. On the second take, they used "a little bit more" explosives, hoping it would be adequate. Fucking-A was it adequate!!!! The transformer disintegrated. The telephone pole turned into toothpicks and small kindling. The first unit (essentially the entire production), with some of the principal actors, was shooting down the road about 500 feet from our location. They said that little pieces of wood rained out of the sky.

Damn, I miss show business!!!!
