On July 30, at approximately 6 a.m., Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the UP Pho & Teriyaki Restaurant at 2620 Bridgeport Way W #B , University Place, after a maroon vehicle crashed into the front of the restaurant, causing significant damage.

The vehicle was no longer inside the building and was found abandoned in another area of the parking lot. According to surveillance video from neighboring businesses, the maroon vehicle had been parked at a nearby AutoZone since the previous day (July 29).

The owner of the vehicle informed AutoZone employees that the vehicle was broken down and that they would be returning to tow the vehicle. At approximately 3:45 a.m. on July 30, a white Honda Pilot towing a dolly attempted to tow the maroon vehicle with a tow strap.

First attempt (approximately 5:15 a.m.): The Honda Pilot pulled the maroon vehicle out of the parking space, but the tow strap snapped, leaving the vehicle abandoned at the far end of the parking lot.

Second attempt (approximately 5:50 a.m.): On the next attempt, the tow strap snapped again, causing the maroon vehicle to lose control, roll downhill, and hit the facade of the UP Pho & Teriyaki restaurant.

Third attempt: The driver of the Honda Pilot continued to attempt to tow the vehicle, but the tow strap snapped again, causing the maroon vehicle to hit the restaurant a second time.

Finally, after the vehicle became stuck in a retaining wall and curb, the driver and a female passenger abandoned the maroon vehicle and fled the scene in the Honda Pilot.

The incident is being investigated as a hit-and-run. Pierce County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information from the public to identify the driver of the white Honda Pilot or the woman who was riding in the vehicle.

The UP Pho & Teriyaki restaurant sustained significant damage to its facade, but there were no reports of injuries.
