There's a deadly subterranean root called "water hemlock" that grows in Yellowstone national park that many people in the 1800s and earlier used to mistaken for a wild carrot. It would kill you from the massive convulsions and body contortions it caused for about 24 hours after ingestion but otherwise was non-toxic (it didn't poison the liver for example, like toadstools). If you could survive the convulsions you could make a full recovery but few did. This reminded me of that.
