Most animals don't have a sense of self. Mirrors mean nothing to them. If you put a young chimp in front of one, it starts off making the "let's play" movements, and slowly realizes it's looking at itself and will wonder off. An adult chimp will realize within a minute that it's looking at it's reflection, then start examining parts of it's body that it's never been able to see before. Top of head, nostrils.
