Wonder what caused that
according to some seminars i attended with regards to that (We are in telecommunication business), they say the reason using phones are forbidden near gas pumps is this...

Some phones, especially those detachable battery types, have the tendency to build up dirt under the terminals, making the battery to phone connection a bit weak or loose. Its okay on standby mode since the phone uses too little juice on standby. But when you make a call, the power usage jumps high and a loose battery will make a slight spark. if that happens while the phone is in the middle of a gas fume cloud, fire starts.

that's one of the reasons why the newer versions of phones have permanent internal batteries
