Re: JESS!!
If this is genuine then I really feel for her. This is what I'm like. The slightest unexpected noise makes me jump + yelp/scream/gasp/whatever! People find it funny but it's horrible + embarrassing to live with. My hands shake all the time too, I'm always losing my grip on things. Such a fun life...

Re: JESS!!
Why is it that some people will jump a mile high if you utter the word 'boo' while others won't bat an eyelid? According to Professor Ottmar Lipp of Curtin University, it all comes down to the individual's startle response, otherwise known as the startle reflex. "Startle is a very interesting reflex. To start from the basic physiology, it is a brainstem reflex, and depending on which source you are relying on, is mediated by two to three synapses. In other words, it's actually very simple," Lipp said. "Basically, if someone says boo or slams a door, what we do is jump, and some people are more jumpy than others. "To psychologists, startle is very interesting. It’s a reflex, but it is also affected by psychological processes, especially emotion." In other words, the startle reflex is just that -- a reflex, and it just so happens some people's reflex is more sensitive than others. However, unlike, say, the automatic reflex that occurs when someone taps your knee, the startle response (and how sensitive it is) can also be affected by your emotional state. "If I put you in a situation where you feel unpleasant, anxious or nervous, you might have a heightened startle reflex," Lipp said. "Whereas if I put you in a state where you are feeling pleasant and I am showing you materials you like and find pleasant, the startle reflex is usually reduced. "Probably the best way to explain it is to imagine if you are watching a movie. Say you are seeing a suspense thriller, think 'Psycho' or the like. You're watching and the person is standing there under the shower, the killer comes with the knife and then someone slams the door. What do you do? You jump out of your skin. "Whereas if you were watching a comedy and there was hilarity all over the place -- people are laughing, pies are flying -- and then someone slams the door, your chance of being really startled is reduced. "So even though the physical stimulus was the same, the reaction was different, because the reflex is dependent on the emotional state you are in." |

Re: JESS!!
Someone's going to give that poor bloke a heart attack one day. Mine is due to my anxiety, it's quite a recent thing (a year at most). My hands shaking is from nerve damage. I always remind myself of the Catherine Tate Show character 'Margaret':

Re: JESS!!
This reminds me of a film I once saw,'Insideous'. There i was watching enjoyably as i'm chugging a beer when, yep you guessed it the red face demon appears! I should say though that i always keep the plasstic sheet on my monitor and this is a reason why. I choked on the beer so much that it actually came out of my nose! |

Re: JESS!!
I saw that video a long time ago, but still get a kick out of it, especially his reaction when that plant (or whatever it was) lands on his desk. I’m sorry to hear of your condition to being startled. I get jumpy to a certain extent too, but I always thought maybe I was drinking too much caffeine. Funny video btw. Thanks for sharing. I noticed and wandered the very same thing. The funniest thing for me about the girl Jess was how in the last 3 or 4 clips, she instantly went to slapping her forehead. At least though in mine & Kelly’s video, both subject looked to be really good sports about it. I’ve seen some videos where the subject got really angry. Haha! |

Re: JESS!!
Thank you. It gets really frustrating + I can't relax, my husband + son find it amusing though. Occasionally my scream will startle my daughter + then she will scream, haha! It can be amusing occasionally, but it's mostly a big annoyance. I'm just glad that I rarely step foot outside as it's very embarrassing when it happens in public!
