Japan's Worst Live Broadcasting Accident

This is a broadcast accident that occurred on September 2, 1998 during a Japanese morning education program.

It was a scene introducing how to deal with fires in high-rise buildings, and it was broadcast live.

In a simulated situation where a fire breaks out in a high-rise apartment, a female announcer experiences the use of a fire escape called 'Selfie Down'.

Originally, this should automatically brake and slow down when going down quickly.

However, on this day, the hook on the 'Selfie Down' was not properly fixed, so it came loose right away.

As a result, the female announcer fell down five floors.

She fell on the urethane cushion and immediately lost consciousness due to a concussion.

She broke 13 bones in her upper body, including her ribs, and had to receive treatment for three months due to a compression fracture of the lumbar spine, and had to undergo rehabilitation for two years.

According to her autobiography, when she came to that day, she was in the intensive care unit with an oxygen mask on and had no memory of falling.

Because of this incident, her outlook on life changed, so she retired as an announcer in December 2007, went to law school to study law, and passed the bar exam in 2010 to become a lawyer.

Female announcer:

"It's too high~! Take a look at this. It's the 5th floor. 15 meters!"

"This is a little more... Isn't there nothing?

"My life depends on this..."

"Is it okay if I fall?"

"One~~ Two~~~"

(Knocked out after falling)

...And then sued the fuck out of the TV station, the manufacturer of Selfie Down, the landlord of the building, the manufacturer of the urethane cushion, etc.

Never trust an invention that the inventor doesn't demonstrate by using it himself.

Re: Japan's Worst Live Broadcasting Accident

I used to get my little brother to test stuff like this ALL the time!

Although sometimes I had to push him out of the window!

Re: Japan's Worst Live Broadcasting Accident

I've used one of them - there were a bunch of these safety devices in an abandoned jet engine testing facility I visited, for gantry crane operators. I guess an accident in some of the buildings was deemed to be so serious (this place had its own power station on site, jet fuel stores, jet fuel heaters, 8 x 23 megawatt electric motors.. it was massive) they would not be able to climb down without being suffocated or blinded by smoke.

Anyway, I think they had a hilarious name, like an Armstrong Retarder or something like that. Most of them were 60+ft in the air, but I found one on a lower platform and tried it out.. makes a bit of a racket but it was a nice gentle descent.

It didn't try one of the 60 footers, got up there to take photos but that was enough for me. But I heard someone else got up there and did
