I'm in the USAF, and my BMT experience was a cake-walk compared to these guys. I know what it's like--I've spoken to numerous instructors and recruiters.
In short, this is exactly right. They are attempting to put the trainees through intense pressure to build emotional strength and military bearing. It is a grueling, demeaning, painful process that will either create a strong and determined individual or identify the folks that ought to wear civvies and not a uniform.
