I never understood tipping. A waiter is there to bring the food. If he does it badly, he's dropped the fucking food, if he does well, the food gets to me. If the guy juggles that shit to my table whilst balancing drinks on his head like a seal, THEN the guy is getting tipped.  |

Cultural expectation more than job related necessity...aka no real reason. wages have to cover a minimum amount if tips cant cover it. |

I thought they were universal. I am in the US. Cooks may make very good salaries, but, the wait staff are paid below minimum wage and depend on tips to supplement their incomes. It's usually 15% for good and 20% for excellent service. If a waiter or waitress goes out of his or her way, I always give them a couple of extra dollars. It has existed as far back as I can remember, but, I cannot tell you why servers are simply not paid decent salaries. |
