More than likely for protection and/or food. Polar bears are notoriously violent towards anything in their way. If you were an infantryman on patrol and you saw a polar bear what would be your reaction? Even if it doesn't initially attack it still knows you are there. Also it is posing a threat to your units camp. Is it better to kill it and eliminate the threat of your buddies being attacked by a hungry bear at night, or to think it's "pretty" and leave it alone?
