Looks like they were using a matured, greased bamboo so that weight is not nearly enough to crack it in half. it is a common native team building game around here during festivities where the aim is to succeed in getting the flag on the tip of the slick pole with whatever means they can without using any tools.

Well we can still hope for a broken neck on that one
