Except cats can just 'bout turn around in their skin and bite you regardless. I agree, the cat was already in significant discomfort, likely in the lower back or rear legs. Feels like this was a 'stuff a towel or two into the carrier opening, pinning the cat to the back, and administer sedative(s) through the openings before proceeding' moment...

This vet went for the dump a suffering animal on the floor technique. I have one of those carriers, the top unclips for just this exact situation
