You are absolutely right about the Aral sea, and this in a way makes this thread on topic: The Death of a Sea !!

The funny - or maybe not so funny - part of the story is that at the time it was seen as a great achievement. I went to school in the sixties (began in 58, in fact), and I remember how impressed everybody also in the west was about the "turning of the rivers" - project. Environment and longterm consequences were simply not on the agenda in those years.
