Bullshit! Chains pop, rope/straps return energy. That's why we only use chains when pulling out. Rope/straps store/return energy, that's why we don't use them. Chains "pop and drop", ropes/straps kill.

Those small logging chains at not intended for that purpose. If he was using a tow strap, he would still be breathing.

Here on my farm, I use 5/8" Grade 70 chain for pulling out other tractors/trucks/etc. It has a working load of just under 8 tons. If you watch out for sales at either the implement dealers or at your farm supply stores, you can get them relatively cheaply, often cheaper than tow straps/ropes.

I have a Jeep, and whenever I use the winch I open my hood and lean it back on the windshield, this is the reason why.
