If I were an entomologist interested in parasitology, I would probably take a wild guess that that caterpillar was infected with a parasite that made it purposefully seek getting ingested by frogs so the parasite could continue its lifecycle. Zombie snails come to mind.

I tend to agree with you. That caterpillar definitely wanted to be eaten! Amazing...never seen anything like that.
