Zośka Battalion in Warsaw Uprising and Gęsiówka Liberation, 1944
The Zośka Battalion of the Polish Home Army's Radosław Group captured the Gęsiówka concentration camp in Warsaw's Wola district on August 5, 1944, during the Warsaw Uprising. Jewish prisoners held at the camp were liberated, although accounts differ on the number freed. Period photographs from the uprising show prisoners in striped uniforms after the liberation, battalion members escorting former prisoners and fighters around the camp watchtower. Other photographs show captured German Panther tanks used by the battalion's Wacek platoon around Okopowa Street. Several frames document the battalion's sewer march to Warecka Street in the Śródmieście district early on September 2, 1944. Many of the photographs were taken by battalion member Juliusz Bogdan Deczkowski. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
