Wojtek the Soldier Bear of the Polish II Corps at Monte Cassino, 1944
Wojtek, a Syrian brown bear obtained near Hamadan, Iran, in 1942, served with the 22nd Artillery Supply Company of the Polish II Corps. He was enlisted as a private and later promoted to corporal. During the 1944 Battle of Monte Cassino, he reportedly carried crates of 25-pounder ammunition. His unit adopted a bear carrying an artillery shell as its emblem. After World War II, Wojtek lived with Polish troops at Winfield Camp near Hutton, Scotland. He was transferred to Edinburgh Zoo in November 1947 and died there on December 2, 1963, at age 21. The photographs show Wojtek holding a cloth, carrying a soldier on his back and standing upright while sparring with a man. Another image shows the company's bear-and-shell emblem. · · · · |

Re: Wojtek the Soldier Bear of the Polish II Corps at Monte Cassino, 1944
Now you're pulling my trick and sulking because nobody cares! It's a much appreciated thread - I learned something new. So I gave you thanks and stars. It's a start. Cute bear, but not quite as huggable as Daisy the Devil |
