Tokaido Road, Japan, Attributed to Felice Beato, c. 1865
Around 1865, Felice Beato is believed to have photographed the Tōkaidō highway running through an avenue of large pines in Japan during the late Edo period. The sepia albumen view shows about a dozen travelers and porters standing on the road. Two men sit at the roadside, one carrying a staff and a round bundle. Surviving prints of Beato's Tōkaidō views are dated from 1865 to about 1869. Also covered here: Photographic Time Line |

This was taken in 1865? Its amazing that they went from this to a world power in something like 50 years. Yeah, exactly 50 years later they won a war against Russia, one of the western worlds titans at the time...
