Taliban Destruction of Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan, March 2001
The Taliban destroyed the two monumental standing Buddhas carved into the cliffs of Afghanistan's Bamiyan Valley in March 2001. The western statue stood about 55 meters tall, while the eastern statue measured about 38 meters. Taliban leader Mullah Omar decreed the destruction of statues on February 26, 2001, and the order was announced publicly on March 1. Demolition began on March 2 with anti-aircraft weapons and artillery fire. After the initial bombardment failed to bring down the figures, anti-tank mines and explosives were placed around them. The work continued for several weeks until both statues had been destroyed. A paired view shows a standing Buddha in its arched sandstone niche before the demolition and a cloud of dust and smoke erupting from a niche during an explosion. The Bamiyan Valley was placed on both the World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2003.

In India, where Buddhism is largely practiced, there still stands many Islamic monuments... In China, where Islam is rarely practiced, there still stands islamic monuments... Can a religion that provokes be truly a religion of peace? Buddhism is a religion of peace. Even the 'extremists' would rather let their religion die then to raise a hand in aggression. |

Well religion helps people who are afraid to realize the reality of the universe. who want to be able to say, "they are never alone". I see and like your point but instead of wiping it out of our minds, why not learn from it? sadly people will never rid religion from themselves. people are afraid of living in the dark. Though there will always be a few who are not afraid. |

Our species can never the joy that freedom brings as long as there is religion. Although religion has taught us to realize the reality of the universe; to base such a fundamental belief on an idea, that may be fallible, can only lead to disaster. If you read the graphic novel, 'the watchmen' you may understand the point im trying to make.

LOL the funny part about this is that most people in the Middle East today will say that there were no monuments or grand anythings before Islam. Maybe this happened before..perhaps around the 7th century? Maybe this is why there's no trace of pre-islamic grandure? |
