Stutthof Concentration Camp in Sztutowo, Poland: 1939-1945 Photos
Stutthof was established near Sztutowo in the former Free City of Danzig in September 1939. It initially operated as a civilian internment camp, became a labor education camp in November 1941 and was designated a regular concentration camp in January 1942. Zyklon B gassing began in a small gas chamber in June 1944. The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum estimates that perhaps as many as 100,000 people were deported to Stutthof and that more than 60,000 died, including more than 25,000 during evacuations. Soviet forces liberated the camp on May 9, 1945, finding about 100 prisoners who had remained hidden. Photographs show prisoners constructing the camp, early inmates receiving food, a Polish prisoner at roll call, female evacuees eating rations and Heinrich Himmler meeting commandant Max Pauly. Other views document the barracks, livestock facilities, crematorium ovens and the gas chamber building after the war. |
