Starving Child and Vulture: "The Vulture and the Little Girl," Sudan, 1993
Kevin Carter photographed an emaciated child with a vulture nearby near Ayod in southern Sudan in March 1993, during a famine associated with the Second Sudanese Civil War. Carter had arrived on a United Nations relief flight and said the child was struggling toward a feeding center. He waited about 20 minutes in hopes that the bird would spread its wings, took the photograph and then chased the vulture away. Another photographer on the trip later said parents were nearby collecting food and had briefly set their children down. The photograph was first published on March 26, 1993, and won the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography. The child was initially described as a girl. In 2011, villagers and the child's father identified him as a boy named Kong Nyong, who survived the famine and died of fevers around 2007. Carter received the Pulitzer in May 1994 and died by suicide on July 27, 1994, at age 33.

"However, he also came under heavy criticism for just photographing — and not helping — the little girl." "I am depressed ... without phone ... money for rent ... money for child support ... money for debts ... money!!! ... I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings and corpses and anger and pain ... of starving or wounded children, of trigger-happy madmen, often police, of killer executioners...I have gone to join Ken if I am that lucky." All I'm going to say is everything you do comes back to you. |

Re: Starving Child and Vulture: "The Vulture and the Little Girl," Sudan, 1993
So tell Amnesty International and the U.N. to get off their asses and do something there. Shit like that happens on a daily basis in Africa and everyone turns a blind eye to it. I think that line in Primeval put it best. Something like... "People don't give a fuck about black on black crime around the corner from their house, what makes you think they give a shit about what happens 3000 miles away in Africa?" Yet the U.S. is sooooooooooo evil for making some terrorists play naked Twister all the while feeding them 3 square meals a day. |
