Soviet AN602 Tsar Bomba Test Footage, Novaya Zemlya, October 30, 1961
The Soviet Union detonated the AN602 hydrogen bomb, commonly known as Tsar Bomba, over Novaya Zemlya on October 30, 1961. Designed for a yield of about 100 megatons, the test weapon used a lead tamper instead of uranium and produced an estimated yield of about 50 megatons. It remains the largest nuclear device ever detonated. The bomb was dropped by parachute from a modified Tu-95V piloted by Maj. Andrei Durnovtsev and detonated about 4,000 meters above the test area. The bomber and an accompanying aircraft were painted reflective white to reduce heat damage. The resulting cloud rose about 64 to 67 kilometers. The footage shows an Atomic Forum title card, a technician at a console, an aircraft being painted, officers near an aircraft, a dark cockpit, the flash or cloud from the explosion and a helicopter on the snow during the post-test survey. |
