In Search Of: 'The Angel of Death' On Josef Mengele, February 1, 1979
In Search Of first aired "The Angel of Death," a 22-minute episode about Josef Mengele, on February 1, 1979. The program followed Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal as he pursued Mengele, who was then believed to be hiding in Paraguay. Mengele was actually living in Brazil by that time and drowned at Bertioga on February 7, 1979, six days after the broadcast. The episode shows Wiesenthal being interviewed and working at his desk in his Vienna office. It also includes a portrait of the young Mengele, an unnamed elderly woman being interviewed, the Mengele company sign and family factory in Günzburg, and an aerial view of a town. The Paraguay sequences show a government building, village streets, a farmhouse, a lake and pier, a man hiding his face, and an armed man crouching in foliage. |
