Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima by Joe Rosenthal, February 23, 1945
Photographer Joe Rosenthal took "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima" on February 23, 1945, atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima. The photograph shows six Marines raising a larger United States flag to replace one raised earlier that day. Sgt. Louis Lowery photographed the first raising. Rosenthal's black-and-white frame shows the men leaning together to push a long pipe flagpole upright amid rubble and debris. According to the United States Marine Corps' current identification, the six men were Sgt. Michael Strank, Cpl. Harlon Block, Pfc. Franklin Sousley, Pfc. Ira Hayes, Pfc. Harold Schultz and Cpl. Harold Keller. Strank, Block and Sousley were killed later in the battle. The Marine Corps replaced the earlier identification of Navy corpsman John Bradley with Schultz in 2016 and replaced Rene Gagnon with Keller in 2019. Gagnon had helped bring the flag to the summit. Rosenthal's photograph won the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Photography, became a prominent image in the Seventh War Loan campaign and served as the model for the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.
