Operation Crossroads: Baker Photos and Able and Baker Footage, Bikini, 1946
Operation Crossroads tested two US atomic bombs against a target fleet of about 95 surplus and captured ships in Bikini Atoll lagoon in 1946. Able was dropped from a B-29 and detonated about 520 feet above the lagoon on July 1, missing its aim point by about 2,130 feet. Baker was detonated about 90 feet underwater on July 25, producing a towering water column and contaminating much of the fleet. A planned third test, Charlie, was canceled. Able and Baker were the first publicly announced US nuclear tests. The six photographs show the Baker explosion from the island shoreline, including its rising water column, expanding condensation cloud and base surge over the target ships. One film shows observers aboard a ship, the Baker column and views across the palm-lined lagoon. The other shows a B-29 in flight, a crewman at a bombsight or camera, the flash and the Able airburst cloud over the sea. |
