Oded Balilty's Pulitzer-Winning Amona Photograph, February 1, 2006
On February 1, 2006, Israeli police evacuated the Amona outpost in the West Bank while enforcing a court ruling ordering the demolition of nine houses. During the confrontation, a 16-year-old Jewish settler pushed against a line of helmeted officers carrying riot shields. Photographer Oded Balilty captured the girl leaning alone into a clear shield as a column of black-clad police advanced from the left. Crowds stood along the ridge behind her while black smoke rose nearby. The girl later said police beat her after the photograph was taken and described the image as a disgrace to Israel. Balilty's photograph won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography.
