Niepce Heliograph: Earliest Surviving Camera Photo by Nicephore Niepce, 1826-27

Nicéphore Niépce made "View from the Window at Le Gras" at his country estate in Saint-Loup-de-Varennes, France, using a camera obscura and a pewter plate coated with bitumen of Judea. The work is the earliest surviving camera photograph made from nature. Its date remains disputed: the Harry Ransom Center, which holds the plate, dates it to 1827, while other accounts place it in 1826 or 1827.

The image records buildings, a tree and the courtyard seen from an upstairs window at Le Gras. The original plate is faint and mirror-like, with rooflines becoming visible when viewed at an angle. A much clearer version widely reproduced during the 20th century came from a copy made in 1952 and a print heavily retouched by photographic historian Helmut Gernsheim. Niépce also made an earlier surviving heliograph in 1825 by copying an engraving onto a plate, but that work was a contact copy rather than an image formed in a camera.

Re: Niepce Heliograph: Earliest Surviving Camera Photo by Nicephore Niepce, 1826-27

I've wondered how long it took the person with the first camera and the person with the second camera to decide it would be funny to take a picture of the other one taking a picture of himself.

Oh, that would have been classic.

I wouldn't say it's the first photo ever taken, but rather the earliest known photograph.
