Janowska Concentration Camp in Lwów: 1941-1943 and 1944 Photos
The SS operated the Janowska concentration camp on Janowska Street in Lwów, now Lviv, Ukraine, from October 1941 until November 1943. It served as a forced-labor camp, a transit point for deportations and a killing site. Prisoners deemed unable to work were shot in the nearby Piaski ravine or deported to the Belzec killing center. In 1943, prisoners assigned to Sonderkommando 1005 were forced to exhume and burn bodies and crush the remaining bones. Prisoners staged an uprising on November 19, 1943, as the SS liquidated the camp. At least 6,000 Jews were killed during the liquidation. The photographs show the prisoner orchestra, SS officers, Heinrich Himmler touring the camp, Gustav Willhaus riding near the gate and shoes found by Soviet forces after liberation. Four photographs show the bone-crushing machine. Those images were taken in August 1944, after liberation, and include survivors posing beside the machine, including Moses Korn. They do not show the machine being operated during the camp's existence. |
