Istanbul, 121 Years Ago
While it was already commonly referred to as İstanbul by its Turkish-speaking population in 1905, the city was still officially recognized internationally as Constantinople until the Republic of Turkey formally centralized the name "Istanbul" in 1930. In 1905, it was ruled by Sultan Abdul Hamid II and served as a highly diverse, cosmopolitan hub where Muslims, Christians and Jews lived side by side. There were around 1 million people living in the city as nowadays around 16 million. Constantinople was already one of the largest and most densely populated cities in the world. Its population was almost evenly split between Muslims and non-Muslim minorities (incl. large Greek, Armenian and Jewish communities). It is now the most populous city in Europe, holding roughly one-fifth of Turkey's entire population, largely driven by massive rural-to-urban migration from Anatolia since the 1950's. |
