Historic Train Wreck Photographs: Montparnasse and Canaan, 1889-1918
Fifteen photographs show separate train wrecks dating from 1889 to 1918 in the United States, Canada and France. Among the identified scenes is the February 27, 1889, derailment of the St. Louis Express at St. George, Ontario, where cars fell from a Grand Trunk Railway bridge and 11 people were killed. Another photograph shows the September 15, 1907, collision at Canaan, New Hampshire. A Boston and Maine freight train collided head-on with the Quebec-Boston express, killing an estimated 25 to 26 people. The collection also includes the October 22, 1895, wreck at Gare Montparnasse in Paris, where a locomotive overran the end of the track, broke through the station wall and fell to the street below. Other scenes show derailed locomotives, overturned passenger cars, collapsed trestles and crowds gathered around wreckage. |
