Guerrillero Heroico: Che Guevara by Alberto Korda, Havana, March 5, 1960
Alberto Korda photographed Ernesto Che Guevara at a memorial in Havana, Cuba, on March 5, 1960, one day after the French freighter La Coubre exploded in Havana harbor. Guevara was 31. The tight portrait shows him in a star-marked beret and zipped jacket, looking beyond the camera. The image, known as Guerrillero Heroico, was not used at the time and remained in Korda's studio until 1967. Italian publisher Giangiacomo Feltrinelli obtained prints and distributed the portrait widely after Guevara's death in October 1967. It became the basis for posters, stencils and other political graphics around the world. Later depictions include a red-and-black stencil and a 7-meter scrap-metal statue unveiled in El Alto, Bolivia, in July 2008, showing Guevara with a rifle and stepping on an eagle.
